Many facets of the mobile phone have changed since the release of the Motorola DynaTAC in the 1980s and the first text message conversation in 1992. Cell phones have become integral parts of our lives, with more in common with a pocket-sized computer than the boxy devices of decades ago. The Apple iPhone is a consumer favorite, with Apple having now released a total of 51 different iPhone models across nearly two decades, from the original iPhone that debuted at Macworld in January 2007 to the full iPhone 17 lineup, including the all-new iPhone 17 Air. Apple has steadily grown from releasing one model per year to launching multiple models annually, each with new features and technology.
Let’s take a look at the iPhone through the years - where it started, the milestones along the way, and the latest additions to the lineup as of 2025 and beyond.
What Are the iPhones in Order?
Since the release of the first breakthrough internet communications device on June 29, 2007 - first unveiled at Macworld 2007 - Apple has introduced a new iPhone model almost every year, usually with multiple versions per year. In all, the brand has grown to include 51 different iPhone models across nearly two decades of releases. Here’s a quick look at the different mobile phones the brand has released over time (not counting the iPads, widescreen iPod models, and innumerable other Apple devices):
- iPhone (2007) - The original iPhone set the foundation for all future smartphones.
- iPhone 3G (2008) - Introduced 3G connectivity and the App Store, launching July 11, 2008.
- iPhone 3GS (2009) - Brought performance improvements and video recording.

The First iPhone
The first iPhone was unveiled at Macworld 2007 by Steve Jobs in San Francisco, and it officially went on sale on June 29, 2007. Experts initially met it with doubt on account of its unprecedented design and high price.
Nonetheless, thousands of excited shoppers lined up outside Apple stores to be among the first to get their hands on the fun new device. In just a few months, more than a million had been sold.
The original iPhone was a marvel of its time, with a flat 3.5-inch touchscreen, the ability to browse the internet through Safari, and a built-in 2MP camera. It was available in 4GB and 8GB models costing $499 and $599, and each operated through 2G connectivity and a Samsung processor. Apple had yet to start making their own internal chipsets.
One year after the iPhone was first released, it saw its first upgrade - moving from a 2G network to a 3G one with the new iPhone 3G, which launched on July 11, 2008. Since then, Apple has gone on to release a total of 51 different iPhone models, with the most recent being the iPhone 17 lineup, which became available in September 2025 and includes the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
iPhone 3G
One year after the iPhone was invented and released, it saw its first upgrade - moving from a 2G network to a 3G one with the new iPhone 3G, which launched on July 11, 2008. Even though Apple wasn’t the first to use 3G in a mobile phone, they were the first to popularize it in the United States and helped set the new standard for cell phones.
When the iPhone 3G came out, it could connect to the web faster and communicate more, with GPS and location services. Corning Gorilla Glass(R) with oleophobic coating protected the iPhone’s screen, and models were available in either black or white. It was also cheaper than the former release, with 8GB available for $199 and 16GB available for $299.
In 2008, Apple also launched the App Store(R), a center for downloading third-party applications and games, forever changing the world of mobile phones and what was possible.
iPhone 3GS
Apple released the iPhone 3GS in 2009. The 3GS was like the original iPhone 3G but was twice as fast and half the price. The 8GB variation was only $99, and the 16GB was $199 - this was the first in Apple’s lineup to include a 32GB storage option, which debuted at $299. The 3.5-inch device was available in black and white and was the first to add voice control, now standard across all smartphones.
iPhone 4
The iPhone 4’s release in 2010 marked the beginning of the FaceTime® era and was the first of Apple’s smartphones with a front-facing selfie cam.
The high-resolution Retina screen - making 326 ppi, twice that of all previous models - and the newly renamed iOS 4 set a new standard for smartphones moving forward. At 4.8 ounces (136g), the iPhone 4 was also 25% thinner than its predecessor, the iPhone 3GS. Though still only available in either black or white, it featured an improved metallic design with a scratch-resistant glass back panel for added durability.
Storage options expanded as high as the 32GB model, which was priced at $299.
iPhone 4S
The iPhone 4S was just like its predecessor in terms of functionality. But the performance was improved by the dual-core CPU and A5 chipset that allowed for hotspot connections. The glass-front, glass-back aluminum frame was scratch-resistant and available in the same black and white hues. The 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models were priced at $199, $299 and $399.
The most notable thing the iPhone 4 and 4S did was introduce the world to the first iteration of Siri®, Apple’s voice-controlled assistant that’s still in use.
iCloud® launched in October 2011 and offered free storage for photos, files, documents and music with automatic wireless syncing between Apple devices. Today, cloud storage is commonplace - but in 2011, the idea of restriction-free storage on a virtual cloud shifted the way smartphones functioned.
iPhone 5
By 2012, Apple was making $156.3 billion in revenue and was a staple in smartphone technology- it was also the year they debuted the iPhone 5, still considered one of Apple’s top fan-favorite phones of all time.
The iPhone 5 continues popping up on consumer lists of all-time favorite iPhone models to this day because it had so many features and advancements without a mega price increase. The slimmer, faster 4-inch phone was the first to support LTE on each of its models.
Storage options went as high as 64GB for $399. The iPhone 5 offered USB 2.0 connectivity and was the first to introduce Lightning connectors, delivering faster charging to pair with its newer, faster network speeds.
Apple started to play with color a little bit with the iPhone 5, though still not the colors we see today. Instead of plain black or white, devices were black with slate or white with silver accents.
iPhone 5S and 5C
In 2013, the iPhone 5S and 5C updated the iPhone 5 with fun color options, a faster processor chip with motion data processing and an all-new feature - Touch ID. The built-in fingerprint sensor would change the face of smartphone security and pave the way for even more advanced biometrics like Apple’s latest face unlock feature.
The iPhone 5S was aluminum and offered a $199 16GB version in either space gray, white with silver or the all-new gold. The iPhone 5C had a plastic back and frame with a glass front. Its 16GB model cost only $99 and was available in brighter colors like lime green, yellow, bright blue or red.
iPhone 6 and 6 Plus
2014 saw the introduction of Apple Pay®, which cemented the smartphone’s status as a necessary product for day-to-day life.
The 4.7-inch iPhone 6’s new Apple Pay feature accepted Visa, Mastercard and Amex certified payments, leading the way to more online wallets.
The A8 processor was faster and LTE network coverage supported the new turn-by-turn Apple Maps navigation and FaceTime, which had only been accessible on Wi-Fi. The 6 also featured camera upgrades and ion-strengthened glass.
The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus cost $100 more than the standard 6 and was available in the same space gray, silver or gold color options - it was fast and modern, one of the most high-tech options at the time. Both devices continued to feature Touch ID security.
Both the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus operated on an A9 chipset, with a 3D Touch display and internal upgrades throughout, including iOS 9.
iPhone 6S and 6S Plus
Apple’s 2015 lineup extended its 2014 iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus releases with the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. One of the landmark features of the iPhone 6 family was Apple Pay, NFC technology to free users from the need to carry cards on them at all times.
Both the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus operated on an A9 chipset, with 3D Touch display enabled and awesome internal upgrades throughout, like iOS 9. The 5 MP FaceTime camera now had Retina Flash and it was possible to shoot 4K video.
Photos were available as Live Photos and still shots, which made for easier smartphone photography. Both models were available in space gray, silver, gold, or a new rose gold hue, which proved enormously popular and became a defining color trend of the era.
iPhone SE
The iPhone SE released in 2016 was Apple’s first return to a compact form factor since the iPhone 5S, featuring a 4-inch Retina display and smooth, matte edges.
Color options included gray, silver, gold, and rose gold, with Touch ID, 4K video, a 12MP camera, and a battery life that could last as long as 13 hours on a single charge. The 16GB model sold at $399 and the 64GB at $499, marking a move toward slightly pricier devices despite the smaller design.
Apple went on to release updated SE models over the years. The second-generation iPhone SE arrived in April 2020, bringing the A13 Bionic chip and Touch ID into a familiar iPhone 8-style body starting at $399. The third-generation iPhone SE followed in March 2022, upgrading to the A15 Bionic chip and adding 5G support while retaining the compact 4.7-inch design, starting at $429.
The fourth-generation iPhone SE launched in February 2025, representing the most dramatic redesign in the SE line’s history - it adopted a bigger 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID replacing Touch ID, an Action button, and the A18 chip - all at a starting price of $599. This generation brought the SE into the modern iPhone design language for the first time, making it a more capable entry-level option for budget-conscious buyers.
iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus each had an A10 Fusion quad-core processor and dual-camera setup, with a haptic home button and IP67 dust and water resistance to protect against 1 meter of submersion for up to half an hour. Color options included jet black, matte black, silver, gold, rose gold and red.
Apple made two major changes that would become permanent - removing the small 16GB storage size option and the headphone jack. Size options now included a 32GB, 128GB and 256GB version, and Apple introduced AirPods® for wireless audio.
iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
In 2017, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus introduced a new glass and aluminum design, available in space gray, silver, red or a fresh take on the now-classic gold option. The body was sleeker and more heavy duty than before, weighing in at 5.22 ounces for the 8 and 7.13 ounces for the 8 Plus. True Tone® technology helped the screen adjust its white balance automatically to its surroundings for a more natural user experience.
Each operated on the A11 chip, which supported augmented reality (AR) optimization and a six-core CPU. Camera improvements included a new slow-motion feature, and the speakers for video playback were 25% louder with increased bass depth.
Why Isn’t There an iPhone 9?
After the iPhone 8, you’d expect the iPhone 9 to be around the corner. However, this wasn’t to be, and to this day there’s no iPhone 9. With the 10th anniversary of the great device that started it all, Apple had something different in mind.
Instead of releasing an iPhone 9, Apple skipped straight to the iPhone X (pronounced “ten”) in 2017, marking a decade since the original iPhone launched on June 29, 2007. The “X” was a deliberate nod to the Roman numeral for 10, celebrating the milestone anniversary - it was a strong move that signaled Apple’s intention to change what an iPhone could be, introducing Face ID, an edge-to-edge OLED display, and removing the classic home button.
Since then, Apple has continued its numbering convention without ever looking back. The lineup progressed through the iPhone XS, XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and most recently the iPhone 17 series, which debuted in September 2025. As of now, Apple has released a total of 51 different iPhone models across its entire history.
The iPhone 17 Lineup
Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup arrived in September 2025 and represented one of the most generational leaps in recent memory. The lineup consisted of four models:
- iPhone 17 - The standard model, offering a refined design, an upgraded camera system, and Apple’s latest A19 chip. It strikes the familiar balance between performance and accessibility that the base iPhone is known for.
- iPhone 17 Plus - The larger sibling to the standard iPhone 17, carrying the same core specs in a bigger form factor for those who prefer more screen real estate and extended battery life.
- iPhone 17 Pro - A powerhouse aimed at enthusiasts and professionals, featuring the A19 Pro chip, a more advanced pro camera system, and a premium titanium build.
- iPhone 17 Pro Max - The flagship of the lineup, combining the largest display, the most capable camera array, and the longest battery life Apple has ever put into an iPhone.
The iPhone Air
Perhaps the most talked-about addition to Apple’s iPhone family is the iPhone Air, which debuted alongside the iPhone 17 lineup in September 2025. Positioned as an ultra-thin, lightweight alternative to the standard iPhone 17, the iPhone Air fills a gap between the base model and the Pro tier.
The iPhone Air’s remarkably slim profile makes it one of the thinnest iPhones Apple has ever made - it targets users who prioritize portability and sleek style without necessarily needing the full Pro feature set. While it shares the core technology found in the iPhone 17 lineup, it trades some battery capacity and camera flexibility for its signature slim design.
The iPhone Air represents Apple’s recognition that not every user wants a bigger, heavier Pro device - sometimes less is more, and the Air delivers that philosophy in a premium package.
iPhone X
Apple skipped the iPhone 9 and went straight for the iPhone X to commemorate the iPhone’s tenth birthday in 2017. The X had a 5.8-inch Super Retina display with an OLED panel, a TrueDepth® dual-lens camera system, Face ID®, navigational gesturing and a new edge-to-edge display.
The phone also featured Dolby Vision® with HDR10, auto image stabilization and a stainless steel body available in silver or space gray - this was also the first phone with fun Animoji features.
iPhone XR, XS and XS Max
2018 built on 2017’s decade-marking iPhone X with the release of the XR, XS and XS Max.
The iPhone XR was 6.84 ounces with a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina(R) display and A12 chipset. The aluminum and glass body continued to give you splash and water resistance. But fast charging options expanded to Qi wireless charging.
Color options included black, white, red, yellow, blue and coral, with 64GB, 128GB and 256GB options starting at $749. This was the first of Apple’s phones to have a 7-nanometer chip in its internal specs and portrait mode with depth control in the selfie cam. The XR also introduced Memoji support.
A Decade of Incremental Improvements
The 5.8-inch iPhone XS offered improved scratch, dust and water resistance with faster Face ID recognition, dual-SIM support and wider stereo sound. It also promised up to an hour and a half longer battery life than the previous release.
It was also the first to include an A12 chip with a second-generation neural engine and was available in space gray, silver or gold with a Gorilla Glass front and stainless steel frame. The iPhone XS Max built on these features. Its 6.5-inch display featured scratch-resistant glass and the same color options.
iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max
The iPhone 16 lineup debuted in September 2024, with Apple Intelligence - Apple’s suite of on-device AI features - as a centerpiece of the upgrade. All four models were powered by the A18 chip, with the Pro models featuring the A18 Pro variant for improved performance and graphics.
The standard iPhone 16 and 16 Plus featured a new Camera Control button, a dedicated hardware shortcut for the camera experience, and an improved 48MP main camera system. The Action Button, previously exclusive to the Pro lineup, also made its way to the standard models.
The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max arrived with bigger screens - 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches respectively - marking a size increase over their predecessors. Both Pro models featured a 48MP Ultra Wide camera upgrade and expanded Apple Intelligence capabilities, like Writing Tools, image generation features, and a more capable Siri with deeper app integration.
iPhone 17, 17 Plus, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max
Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup arrived in September 2025, continuing the company’s push into artificial intelligence alongside notable hardware refinements across all four models. All iPhone 17 models shipped with expanded Apple Intelligence features and were powered by Apple’s next-generation A19 series chips.
The iPhone 17 and 17 Plus carried the A19 chip, with refined camera systems and improved thermal performance. Display quality and battery life saw incremental improvements over the iPhone 16 generation, continuing Apple’s steady annual cadence of upgrades.
The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max stepped things up further with the A19 Pro chip, delivering improved machine learning and graphics performance. Pro models featured advanced camera hardware with improved low-light capabilities and refined computational photography powered by Apple Intelligence. The ProMotion adaptive refresh display and titanium build from the previous generation carried forward, cementing the Pro lineup’s position as Apple’s flagship offering.
iPhone 17 Air
Perhaps the most talked-about addition to the 2025 lineup was the iPhone 17 Air - a brand new model that replaced the Plus tier and signaled Apple’s intent to push smartphone design to new extremes. The iPhone 17 Air became one of the thinnest smartphones ever shown at launch, featuring an ultra-slim profile that prioritized form factor without sacrificing core performance.
Powered by the A19 chip and running full Apple Intelligence support, the iPhone 17 Air featured a large display in a remarkably thin and lightweight body, targeting users who want a premium, full-sized iPhone experience without the heft of the Pro Max. While it made some trade-offs - most notably a single rear camera compared to the multi-lens Pro system - the Air was widely regarded as one of the most exciting iPhone designs in years, drawing comparisons to the original iPhone Air concept that enthusiasts had long speculated about.
The iPhone 17 Air’s arrival suggests Apple is carving out a new long-term product line centered around thinness and design, much as the MacBook Air has become a defining product in its laptop lineup.
iPhone 11, Pro and Pro Max
2019 was a big year for Apple as it released its iPhone 11 lineup.
The iPhone 11 had a 6.1-inch display with dual 12 MP ultra wide and wide cameras and a 12 MP selfie camera in the front - it could shoot great 4K videos as high as 60 frames per second, with new slow motion selfie options and night mode for low light photography. The improved cameras could even take still photos during videos.

September 2025 marked the arrival of Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup - one of the most generational leaps in recent memory. iPhone 17
The standard iPhone 17 continued Apple’s tradition of a capable, well-rounded flagship experience at a more accessible price point - it featured an updated design, Apple’s latest chip architecture and camera improvements over the iPhone 16 lineup that debuted in September 2024. The iPhone 17 retained a 6.1-inch display with improved brightness and efficiency, a refined aluminum and glass build available in a number of modern color options.
iPhone 17 Air
Perhaps the most talked-about addition to the 2025 lineup was the iPhone 17 Air - Apple’s thinnest iPhone ever. Designed as a sleek, ultralight alternative to the standard model, the iPhone 17 Air was positioned between the base iPhone 17 and the Pro tier in terms of features and pricing - it featured a single rear camera system optimized through Apple’s computational photography, a quality edge-to-edge display and a remarkably slim profile that drew comparisons to the MacBook Air’s design philosophy applied to a smartphone. The iPhone 17 Air appealed strongly to users who prioritized portability and style without sacrificing core performance.
iPhone 17 Pro
The iPhone 17 Pro raised the bar for Apple’s professional-tier devices - it featured a more refined titanium frame, a next-generation camera system with improved telephoto and low-light capabilities and Apple’s most powerful mobile chip at the time of release. The Pro also expanded on the Dynamic Island introduced in earlier generations, with deeper software integration and improved always-on display functionality.
iPhone 17 Pro Max
The iPhone 17 Pro Max offered everything found in the Pro model but with a bigger display and the largest battery ever placed in an iPhone at launch - it was focused on power users, content creators and anyone who wanted the absolute best Apple had to offer in a smartphone. The Pro Max’s camera system, combined with Apple’s video capabilities, made it a genuine tool for professional filmmakers and photographers.
iPhone 12, 12 Mini, Pro and Pro Max
The 12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max have ceramic shield protection and increased defense against dust, water and splash damage. The Pro and Pro Max come in silver, graphite, gold and blue options, with textured matte glass and a stainless steel frame. The iPhone 12 Mini is available in black, white, red, green, blue and purple, with an aluminum design and MagSafe charging options.
The iPhone 12 series, released in October 2020, represented a big leap forward in mobile technology with its introduction of 5G, improved design and improved camera systems.
The iPhone 12 featured a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display and the A14 Bionic chip, which improved processing power and efficiency. Another landmark feature when the device launched were its better augmented reality experiences compared to other models.
iPhone 12 Innovations
The iPhone 12 was also the first model to feature Ceramic Shield for increased durability, which makes it four times more resistant to drops. Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup arrived in September 2025, marking the latest generation of iPhones and bringing the total number of iPhone models to 51. The lineup retained the four-model structure of its predecessor, with the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Plus, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
