iPhone Repair Prices: How Much Will It Cost?

Ever since the first iPhone hit the market in 2007, it has been one of the most popular smartphones available. Even though iPhones are designed, tested, and manufactured to be resilient and long-lasting, they’re certainly not immune to damage. What are iPhone repairs prices like these days, anyways?

Knowing iPhone repair and service costs for common problems like screen repair and battery replacement can help you make an informed decision about fixing your smartphone.

Costs of Common iPhone Repair and Service Issues

“How much will it cost to get service for my iPhone?” This is a common question these days, as the iPhone has become a widely popular device (and we subject our smartphones to all kinds of potential damage every day). The price of iPhone repairs varies based on the phone’s model, the type of damage, and whether you go through an Apple-authorized service provider or a third-party repair shop.

Screen Repair

Cracked and shattered screens are common issues for iPhone users, and the costs to fix them vary considerably based on which model you have. First and foremost, whether you have AppleCare+ makes a huge difference.

Screen repairs are eligible for replacement with AppleCare+ for just $29, regardless of which model you own. AppleCare+ provides coverage for accidental damage at a relatively low rate, although Apple’s standard warranty doesn’t cover accidental damage from handling.

If you don’t have AppleCare+, costs vary quite a bit for Apple-certified repairs, from $129 for an iPhone SE to $379 for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. If you choose to have Apple fix your phone, you can either schedule a visit at an Apple Store or select the “Send in for repair” option on Apple’s website. This way, you can rest assured that certified repairs are performed on your device and that it meets Apple’s safety and performance guidelines.

If you opt for a third-party repair shop, you can often save some money, with costs ranging from roughly $100 to $300. That said, you won’t have as much reassurance that the repaired device meets Apple’s safety and performance standards. Furthermore, third-party repairs may not use genuine Apple parts, which can greatly hamper the device’s general functionality and resale value.

Battery Replacement

Batteries degrade with use and over time, resulting in decreased battery life and other performance problems. This is another situation where a protection plan comes in handy, as AppleCare+ includes battery service for free if your battery health drops below 80%.

Don’t have AppleCare+? Costs can range from just $69 for any older iPhone model (prior to the iPhone X) to $119 for the latest and greatest iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Again, first-party repairs will always include Apple parts designed, tested, and manufactured for Apple’s safety guidelines. But if saving a few bucks is a priority for you, independent repair shops can often fix battery issues for around $40 to $80.

Water Damage Repair

While iPhones are highly resistant to water, they’re not waterproof. Whether you get your phone repaired using genuine Apple parts designed specifically for your iPhone or opt for third-party repairs, water damage repairs can be expensive. Water damage is a service covered by AppleCare+, although it will still set you back $99.

Without AppleCare+, costs can skyrocket, as first-party repairs performed by trusted experts typically cost between $549 and $699 for recent models. Older models cost a bit less — for example, water damage repairs cost around $399 for an iPhone XR.

Back Glass Replacement

Apple first started using glass on the back of iPhones with the iPhone 4, though it discontinued back glass for the iPhone 6 and brought it back for the iPhone 8 and later models. Interestingly, if you opt for service directly from Apple, they only offer back glass repairs for the iPhone 12 and newer models.

Unlike the other repairs we’ve discussed, back glass replacement isn’t necessarily cheaper for older phones. For example, first-party repairs for an iPhone 12 Pro Max cost a whopping $499, while the same repairs on a brand-new iPhone 16 Pro Max cost much less, at $199.

If you have AppleCare+, Apple offers Express Replacement Service, in which they’ll send you a replacement phone so you aren’t stuck without one during repairs. AppleCare+ customers pay a fee of just $29 to repair back glass damage.
