The iPhone 17 base model finally includes 120Hz ProMotion - something that’s been locked to the Pro lineup for years. ProMotion automatically adjusts the display’s refresh rate based on what’s actually on screen. Scroll faster and it reaches a full 120Hz and everything feels noticeably smoother. On static content (a page, the lock screen, anything like that) it drops way down to save on battery. It’s a pretty smart system and it does affect how the phone feels to use every day.

Apple first introduced this feature with the iPhone 13 Pro in 2021 and it’s been exclusive to Pro models ever since. For the majority of iPhone buyers, that’s been four years without access to one of the best features Apple has put in a phone.

The reason it took this long probably has to do with cost control and the need to keep its product lineup separate. Display quality has long been one of Apple’s biggest incentives to get buyers to move as high as a Pro model and they’ve guarded that edge pretty tightly over the years. Whatever was going on internally, base model iPhone 17 buyers walk away with a display that feels closer to Pro-level than any standard iPhone has before.

For day-to-day use, a better display is one of the most worthwhile upgrades Apple could make at this price point - and it doesn’t need a new camera or a new chip to get there. Everything you do on the phone goes through that screen, all day long.

The New 48MP Front Camera for Selfies

Megapixels are only a part of the equation. The jump to 48MP only pays off when the processing can match it.

The iPhone 16’s 12MP front camera has started to feel a little behind the times - a few Android competitors have been running higher-resolution selfie cameras for a couple of years now, after all. With that in mind, this upgrade reads less like a big leap forward - it’s more that Apple has finally reached where the competition already was. How much the photo quality ends up reflecting that resolution bump is a different question and we won’t know the answer until sample photos are available.

What Apple actually does with those extra megapixels on the software side is worth a close look - that part will matter just as much as the hardware upgrade itself. A 48MP front camera with Apple’s computational photography behind it could turn out to be genuinely impressive. But it could just as well fall short if the software isn’t up to it.

Should You Wait for the iPhone 17

A pretty picture of the iPhone 17 has come together at this point and the actual question is whether any of these changes are actually going to matter for you personally.
