For gaming and heavy multitasking, that gap matters, and based on the numbers so far, it only gets wider under pressure.
A graphically demanding game where notifications, background apps and music all compete for resources at the same time is a stress test - and most phones go through just that every day. The A16 manages it well enough. But the A19 Pro is built for that sort of load and there’s more room to work with. Early benchmark leaks already point to notable gains in raw processing power, though we should wait on any firm conclusions until the official numbers are actually out.

The display and battery improvements between these two models are also worth a look and those two improvements actually matter more than they might seem - the case for making the switch gets quite a bit harder to ignore.
Better Battery Life and a Brighter Screen
After three years with an iPhone 14 Pro Max, the battery probably isn’t what it used to be. That slow, gradual decline is one of the more frustrating parts of holding onto an older phone - and for many, it ends up being the reason that finally makes upgrading feel worth it.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to have a very similar battery capacity to its predecessor (it’s fine) - the A19 Pro chip is where the difference shows up. Newer chips pull noticeably less power to run the same workload, so even with a nearly identical battery size, you’d likely get more screen time out of each charge - and far less desperate mid-afternoon hunts for an outlet.
On the display side, Apple is expected to push peak brightness even higher on the 17 Pro Max. The 14 Pro Max already has a beautiful screen, so it’s more of a refinement than a dramatic leap - but if you spend a fair amount outside in direct sunlight, that extra brightness goes a long way. A few other display improvements have been rumored as well, aside from brightness, though nothing along those lines has been announced yet. None of these changes are the flashy headline features that make for a great product launch.
Is the Price Gap Worth It
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is set to launch at full flagship pricing, which puts it out of reach for most budgets. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is pretty easy to find secondhand or refurbished for a fraction of that cost and the price gap is worth a close look.
The 14 Pro Max is still a capable phone and covers everything most users need from day to day without any complaints. With prices where they are now, it’s an even easier choice to justify.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is a strong device - the camera upgrades and the new chip are genuine improvements and they’re fun. The main question is if a day-one buy makes financial sense. Those upgrades come at a high premium and from a pure value standpoint, it can take a few years of ownership before that extra cost pays off.
Trade-in value is another part of this that deserves attention - and it’s the part that gets glossed over the most. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is probably worth the wait for anyone who shoots tons of video or cares about their photos. The camera upgrades go well beyond the usual minor year-over-year updates. From everything we’ve seen so far, this looks like a genuine step forward - and for anyone who records or shoots with any regularity, that progress will matter quite a bit.
For everyone else, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is still a great phone. The price has dropped quite a bit since launch and at this point, it’s much easier to justify if you don’t need the absolute latest and greatest. If you need a new phone soon and want to keep costs down, the 14 Pro Max holds up well. It’s still a very capable device and at what it’s going for, the value is hard to beat.
