How Much Does an iPhone 8 Plus Screen Replacement Costs
Table of Contents
The iPhone 8 Plus has been around since 2017. The 8 Series was quite popular with Apple fans, and to date, the company has sold around 125 million iPhone 8 and 8 Plus units.
While the iPhone 8 Plus is a well-made, sturdy smartphone, it’s not impervious to damage, especially after the years have taken their toll. One of the most common problems with iPhone 8 Plus models today is a cracked screen. In addition, given that the iPhone 8 Series replaced the 7 Series’ aluminum body with a glass back, the iPhone 8 Plus has a lot of glass in its construction!
It might seem all but inevitable that an iPhone 8 Plus would have some sort of glass-related damage by now, but there are options for those of you still rocking this popular phone model. It’s important to understand iPhone screen repair prices, the best (and cheapest) repair shop options, preventive measures to protect your iPhone display, and how you can sell your device — even if it has a cracked iPhone screen.
How Much Does iPhone Screen Repair Cost?
How much you’ll spend repairing the display on your iPhone 8 Plus varies based primarily on where you get it fixed. That said, there are some other variables, such as whether you just have a slightly cracked screen or if it’s completely shattered. As you might expect, the former can be cheaper than the latter.
Whether you still have your iPhone 8 Plus’s original screen or you’ve had it replaced before, weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each repair option before making your choice. They all have varying levels of cost and convenience, and there’s no universal “right answer.”
Will you opt for Apple’s in-house repair specialists? Maybe you prefer using a local independent repair shop? Or, if you’re especially tech-savvy, should you try replacing your cracked screen yourself?
Where to Get Your Cracked Screen Fixed (and How Much It’ll Cost)
Before we get started, we’ll mention that if you have AppleCare+, you should always have Apple perform your iPhone screen repairs. With this protection plan, all screen replacements and repairs cost just $29 — even the iPhone 8 Plus’s original warranty lacked this generous repair price.
For the rest of you, let’s dig in and see which option looks best for your specific budget and circumstances.
iPhone Repair and Service
Without AppleCare+, Apple’s in-house iPhone screen repair services can be a bit on the expensive side. However, if you want peace of mind that your repairs were done right, there’s really no better option.
Pros
- We love how easy it is to look up your exact repair prices on Apple’s website. Visit the “iPhone Repair and Service” page and scroll down to the “How much will it cost?” header, about halfway down the page.
- Pick the service you need from the drop-down menu: Cracked screen (front only), back glass damage (unfortunately, Apple no longer offers to repair iPhone 8 back glass damage), cracked screen and back glass damage, battery, rear camera, or other damage.
- Select “iPhone 8” from the “Product or accessory” drop-down, then choose the 8 Plus under “Model.”
- Click “Get estimate” and Apple will tell you how much your iPhone screen repair or replacement will cost.
- You can choose to have your iPhone repaired at an Apple Store, with an Apple-Authorized Service Provider, or via mail, whichever is most convenient for you. Not everyone lives near an Apple Store or authorized technician’s shop, so it’s nice to have the option to mail your phone in
- You’ll get peace of mind knowing that Apple’s in-house experts repaired your iPhone with genuine, first-party parts. This means that your new screen will look and feel just like the device’s original screen. You don’t always have this assurance when you take your phone to an unauthorized local smartphone repair shop, and third-party parts can negatively affect performance and resale value (plus, they void your remaining warranty!).
Cons
- Apple’s first-party repair prices can be pretty steep if you don’t have AppleCare+. Here are the rates they quoted us when we used the estimating tool on their website:
- Repairing a cracked iPhone screen for the 8 Plus model costs $169
- Battery replacement for an iPhone 8 Plus costs $69
- Apple quoted “Other damages” at up to $399 for the iPhone 8 Plus
- The mail-in option can have lengthy wait times. When we inquired about getting an iPhone 8 Plus fixed via mail, they said it could take up to nine business days after Apple received our device.
Independent Smartphone Repair Shops
You can’t beat Apple’s iPhone Repair and Service when it comes to quality, but it’s honestly pretty easy to beat their prices. Independent repair shops — whether it’s a local mom-and-pop store or a national chain franchisee — often offer lower rates for iPhone screen repair than Apple itself. That said, you’ll need to keep your eye out for a few important factors.
Pros
- The biggest advantage for third-party smartphone repair centers is the fact that they’ll usually perform your repairs at a discount compared to Apple’s in-house repair service. We checked with a few repair shops to get quotes for iPhone 8 Plus screen replacement, and the highest bid we got was $109, a full $60 cheaper than Apple’s estimate for this service. (If you’re curious, the lowest bid was $99 — there apparently isn’t too much variance in iPhone 8 Plus screen repair pricing among independent shops.)
- These shops might be more convenient than finding an official Apple repair center or waiting for the mail process. The simple fact is that independent repair shops vastly outnumber Apple Stores. Many more people live near a mom-and-pop repair business, so this option could save them valuable time and money over traveling the extra distance to an official Apple retailer (or using Apple’s mail-in option).
- Even though they don’t have the assurances of Apple itself, third-party repair shops are often high-quality businesses with talented technicians. Just because they don’t work for Apple doesn’t mean they don’t know their stuff.
- Furthermore, if you have any non-Apple smartphones, tablets, or computers that need repairs, independent repair centers typically fix Samsung and Google devices, too, along with a host of other products. This one-stop-shop vibe isn’t something you’ll find with Apple.
Cons
- Independent repair shops might not use genuine Apple parts, and if they do, they might charge you extra. Sometimes, the quote you receive from these shops includes generic, third-party parts. If you want them to use first-party components, you might have to pay a surcharge, mitigating much of the cost savings of using these services to begin with.
- For example, one of the repair shops we got a quote from told us there would be a $30 surcharge to use a genuine Apple screen and components. Even with the surcharge, this option was still only $134, while Apple charges $169 (unless you have AppleCare+).
- Third-party technicians work on a ton of various devices every day, and they may not have the same depth or breadth of Apple device knowledge as an in-house expert. After all, as we mentioned in the Pros section above, these techs need to know how to fix all sorts of other products — Apple repair pros strictly fix Apple devices, all day, every day.
Do-It-Yourself Solutions
Some of you might be looking at the repair prices cited above and thinking that you could save some money by doing it yourself. While it’s true that you could save some cash if everything goes right, there are more than enough disadvantages to outweigh any cost savings this method might provide.
Pros
- If you know what you’re doing, this is the cheapest way to get an iPhone 8 Plus screen replacement. You can get a screen repair kit for $80 or less for the iPhone 8 Plus, and there obviously aren’t any labor costs to factor in. If you’re tech-savvy and need to save some cash, the DIY route is available, but it’s a major hassle at best.
Cons
- If you don’t know exactly what you’re doing, there’s a high probability that you’ll make a mistake and cause further damage to your iPhone 8 Plus. It might not be terribly difficult to perform an iPhone screen repair, but there is a surprisingly long list of steps involved and a ton of little parts to keep track of. Even one tiny mistake could spell disaster.
- Even if everything goes perfectly, performing your own repairs usually voids your warranty. This means that if anything else goes wrong and you want Apple’s help, you’ll either need to pay full price for it or go it alone.
- Fixing your own iPhone 8 Plus reduces its resale value. Far more people are interested in buying a certified refurbished iPhone than one that the previous owner tinkered with.
Tips to Extend Your iPhone 8 Plus Device’s Lifespan
Why pay for expensive repairs when you can avoid them in the first place? Here are a few tricks to make your iPhone 8 Plus last a little longer.
- Apply a high-quality screen protector to prevent dents and scratches
- Use a reliable case to protect your phone from accidental drops
- Carry your phone in a different pocket from your keys to avoid scratching
- Purchase an extended warranty or protection plan to cover unexpected damages in the future
