Can You Delete a Text Message?
Is there anything worse than sending a text to the wrong person? Imagine you’re trying to text your friend Sarah about issues with your mutual acquaintance, Joe. You type, “Joe is really getting on my nerves lately,” click “Send,” and pause in horror: You didn’t send the message to Sarah, you sent it to Joe!
We’ve all been there, and we’ve all had the same panicked follow-up question: “Is there a way to permanently delete text messages?” The answer can vary, and we’ll warn you that it might not be the one you want to hear.
Can You Permanently Delete Text Messages for All Parties?
In many situations, you can’t actually delete messages on the recipient’s phone, but there are some exceptions to this rule. It all comes down to which messaging app you use and whether your recipients use compatible versions of these apps. Let’s take a look at how the process works for various message apps and operating systems.
iMessages (Apple)
Apple’s in-house proprietary texting function is called iMessages, and it’s available on the vast majority of modern Apple devices. iMessage enables Apple devices to send messages back and forth without exiting the Apple ecosystem. However, iMessages is just one of several features available on Apple’s “Messages” app on iPhones and iPads, as these devices also support other types of text messaging, such as Short Message Service (SMS), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), and Rich Communication Services (RCS).
If your device runs on iOS 16 or later, and you sent an iMessage to recipients who also operate on iOS 16 or later, you can delete text messages for everyone. However, you need to delete the message within two minutes of sending it, and your recipients will still get a notification showing that you unsent a previous text. To do so, open the “Messages” app and click on the conversation. Then, tap and hold the message and tap “Undo Send” when the prompt arises.
However, as we mentioned, this method only deletes messages from people who use Apple devices on iOS 16 or later. As an example, let’s say you send a group text to four friends. Two of those friends have iPhones running on current versions of iOS, one other friend has an outdated version of iOS, and the fourth has an Android. In this scenario, the message will be successfully deleted from your device and the two other current iPhones, but the message will remain for your other two friends.
Android Messaging
Unfortunately, once you send a text from an Android, you no longer have the option to unsend or delete it. Whether you want to delete multiple messages or just one, you’re stuck in a problem with no solution.
Other Messaging Apps
If you use a third-party app like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, there are usually ways to successfully delete individual messages or even an entire thread. WhatsApp has changed the time limit for deleting texts several times over the years, from two days to one day to a little over an hour. Currently, according to the online WhatsApp Help Center, you have a 15-minute window to delete or edit messages. Meanwhile, on Facebook Messenger, you have 10 minutes.
The process on WhatsApp is pretty simple. Simply tap and hold the message bubble, then tap the trash can icon in the top right corner of the screen. Then, tap “Delete for everyone” or “Delete for me.” Much like with the iOS method, this will delete one or more messages for all recipients and the sender, although it leaves evidence behind in the form of a deleted message notification.
Deleting Messages From Your Own Device
While you can’t always delete messages for everyone, you can always get rid of them on your own phone. On an iPhone, you can delete individual messages from your device by tapping and holding the message and tapping the trash icon. You can also delete an entire thread by swiping left on it and tapping “Delete.”
On an Android, the exact process can vary a bit depending on your phone’s make and model. Generally speaking, you just need to tap and hold the message, then click on the trash can — the process is identical to deleting messages from WhatsApp, but it only deletes it on your end.
